Description

It is also used to treat certain hormone problems (excess prolactin). The drug is used to reduce or prevent breast milk production, except after childbirth (postpartum).

What is Dostinex (cabergoline)?

Cabergoline is in a group of drugs called dopamine receptor antagonists. It works by reducing the amount of prolactin (a hormone) that is released from the pituitary gland.

Cabergoline is used to treat a hormone imbalance in which there is too much prolactin in the blood (also called hyperprolactinemia).

Cabergoline may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Important safety information:

  • Dostinex (Cabergoline) may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Dostinex with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Dostinex (Cabergoline) may cause dizziness, hot weather, exercise, or fainting; alcohol, lightheadedness. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
  • If you suspect that you may be pregnant, contact your doctor so that a pregnancy test can be arranged.
  • Dostinex should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Dostinex (Cabergoline) while you are pregnant. It is not known if Dostinex is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Dostinex (Cabergoline) .

Dostinex (cabergoline) side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using cabergoline and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
  • feeling light-headed, fainting.
  • cough or trouble breathing; or

Keep taking cabergoline and talk with your doctor if you have any of these less serious side effects:

  • hot flashes.
  • numbness or tingly feeling; or
  • dizziness, drowsiness, nervousness;
  • headache;
  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation;

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

Symptoms of a cabergoline overdose may include stuffy nose, feeling light-headed, hallucinations, confusion, or fainting.

How should I take Dostinex (cabergoline)?

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Cabergoline is usually taken twice each week for at least 6 months. Do not take this medication every day unless your doctor tells you to.

Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication.

To be sure this medication is helping your condition, your blood will need to be tested on a regular basis to measure your prolactin levels. Your doctor may want to continue checking your prolactin levels for several months after you stop taking cabergoline. Do not miss any scheduled visits.

Store cabergoline at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
