Piroxicam Gel (generic Feldene) Reviewbrand name: Feldenegeneric names: Piroxicam, Piroxicam betadex Why is Feldene prescribed?Feldene, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is used to relieve the inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis (the most common form of arthritis). It is prescribed both for sudden flare-ups and for long-term treatment. Special warnings about Piroxicam (Feldene)The chances that Feldene will cause a stomach ulcer or bleeding are dramatically higher if you've had such problems previously. Severe stomach reactions are also more likely among older adults, heavy drinkers, smokers, those in poor health, and people taking steroids or blood thinners. Feldene has been known to damage the kidneys, and is not recommended for people with advanced kidney disease. Feldene can also cause liver damage. If you develop warning signs of liver dysfunction such as a flu-like feeling, yellow skin or eyes, itchiness, fatigue, and pain in the upper right abdomen, stop taking Feldene and see your doctor immediately. Drugs such as Feldene may cause eye disturbances in some people. If you develop visual problems, notify your eye doctor. If you have heart disease, or high blood pressure, or other conditions that cause fluid retention, use Piroxicam (Feldene) with caution. Feldene can increase water retention. What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?They need to know if you have any of these conditions: anemia asthma, foods, other medicines, aspirin or other salicylates, other NSAIDs, or leg edema (fluid retention) kidney disease liver disease stomach or duodenal ulcers history of stroke systemic lupus erythematosus ulcerative colitis an unusual or allergic reaction to Piroxicam, history of blood clots, history of heart attack, heart rhythm problems, heart failure, high blood pressure, especially aspirin sensitive asthma bleeding problems or taking medicines that make you bleed more easily such as anticoagulants ('blood thinners') cigarette smoker coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery within the past 2 weeks diabetes drink more than 3 alcohol-containing beverages a day heart or circulation problems like angina, dyes or preservatives pregnant or trying to get pregnant breast-feeding Pregnancy and BreastfeedingCertain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.
Most important fact about FeldeneIn a few patients on long-term therapy, Feldene can cause stomach ulcers and bleeding. Warning signs include severe abdominal or stomach cramps, pain or burning in the stomach, and black, tarry stools. Inform your doctor immediately if you develop any of these symptoms. Why should Piroxicam (Feldene) not be prescribed?If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Feldene, aspirin, or similar drugs, or if you have had asthma attacks caused by aspirin or other drugs of this type, you should not take Piroxicam (Feldene). If you develop breathing difficulties or allergic symptoms after taking Feldene, seek emergency treatment immediately. |
