LovastatinDescriptionMevacor ( Lovastatin ) is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (also known as a statin) used in combination with a low-cholesterol and low-fat diet to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in your blood.

Mevacor is prescribed to prevent this problem--called coronary heart disease--or to slow its advance if the arteries are already clogging up. What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Mevacor (lovastatin)?Do not use this medication if you are allergic to lovastatin, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you have liver disease.Before taking lovastatin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use lovastatin, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment. FDA pregnancy category X. This medication can cause birth defects. Do not use lovastatin if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment. Use an effective form of birth control while you are using this medication. It is not known whether lovastatin passes into breast milk. Do not take lovastatin without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Lovastatin is not for use in children younger than 10 years of age.What drug(s) may interact with lovastatin?Do not take Lovastatin with any of the following: amprenavir atazanavir clarithromycin delavirdine erythromycin grapefruit juice indinavir itraconazole ketoconazole lopinavir; ritonavir mibefradil nefazodone nelfinavir red yeast rice ritonavir saquinavir troleandomycin Lovastatin may also interact with the following medications: alcohol amiodarone barbiturates (examples: phenobarbital, butalbital, primidone) bosentan carbamazepine cilostazol cyclosporine danazol diltiazem efavirenz imatinib, STI-571 isradipine fluconazole medicines to lower cholesterol or triglycerides (examples: clofibrate, fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, niacin) medicine used to stop early pregnancy (mifepristone, RU-486) nicardipine oxcarbazepine phenytoin rifampin, rifabutin, or rifapentine St. John's Wort telithromycin verapamil voriconazole warfarin Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, nutritional supplements, including non-prescription medicines, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines. Most important fact about Mevacor (Lovastatin)Mevacor (Lovastatin) is usually prescribed only if diet, exercise, and weight-loss fail to bring your cholesterol levels under control. It's important to remember that Mevacor is a supplement--not a substitute--for these other measures. To get the full benefit of the medication, you need to stick to the diet and exercise program prescribed by your doctor. What happens if I miss a dose?Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What side effects may I notice from taking lovastatin?Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: Rare or uncommon: blurred vision, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth skin rash, itching unusual tiredness or weakness yellowing of the skin or eyes Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): constipation or diarrhea difficulty sleeping dizziness headache nausea, or weakness redness, cramps, tenderness, difficulty passing urine fever muscle pain |
