Lopressor is used for:

Treating high blood pressure, alone or with other medicines; long-term treatment of chest pain; and reducing the risk of death because of heart problems in patients who have had a heart attack. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Lopressor is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent ("beta-blocker"). It works by reducing the amount of work the heart has to do (reduces chest pain) and the amount of blood the heart pumps out (lowers high blood pressure). It is also used to stabilize the heart rhythm in conditions in which the heart is beating too fast or at an irregular rhythm.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Lopressor (Metoprolol)

If Lopressor (Metoprolol) is taken with certain other drugs, decreased, the effects of either could be increased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Lopressor with certain high blood pressure drugs such as reserpine (Ser-Ap-Es).

What if I miss a dose?


If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. There should be at least 4 hours between doses (or 8 hours if taking extended-release products).

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Call 1-800-222-1222 to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, your local poison control center ( http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm ), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include difficult or slowed breathing; very slow heart rate; severe dizziness; fainting; weakness.

Proper storage of Lopressor (Metoprolol) :

Store Lopressor at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Lopressor (Metoprolol) out of the reach of children and away from pets.

Recommended dosage

ADULTS

Dosages of Lopressor (Metoprolol) should be individualized by your doctor. It should be taken with or immediately following meals.

High Blood Pressure

The usual starting dosage of Lopressor (Metoprolol) is a total of 100 milligrams a day taken in 1 or 2 doses, whether taken alone or with a diuretic. The initial dosage of Toprol-XL ranges from 50 to 100 milligrams once a day. Your doctor may gradually increase the dosage up to 400 milligrams a day. Generally, the effectiveness of each dosage increase will be seen within a week.

Angina Pectoris

The usual starting dosage is a total of 100 milligrams a day taken in 2 doses of Lopressor (Metoprolol) or a single dose of Toprol-XL. Your doctor may gradually increase the dosage up to 400 milligrams a day.

Heart Failure

The recommended starting dose of Toprol-XL is 25 milligrams once daily for 2 weeks (12.5 milligrams in severe cases). Your doctor will double the dose every 2 weeks up to the highest level that works without side effects. The maximum recommended dose is 200 milligrams daily.

Generally, the effectiveness of each dosage increase will be seen within a week. If treatment is to be discontinued, your doctor will withdraw the drug gradually over a period of 1 to 2 weeks.

Heart Attack

Lopressor (Metoprolol) can be used for treatment of heart attack both in the hospital during the early phases and after the individual's condition has stabilized. Your doctor will determine the dosage according to your needs.

CHILDREN

The safety and effectiveness of Lopressor (Metoprolol) have not been established in children.

•medicines for high blood pressure
•medicines to control heart rhythm
•medicines for malaria
•monoamine oxidase inhibitors (Azilect®, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
