Why is Norvasc prescribed?

Norvasc is prescribed for angina, a condition characterized by episodes of crushing chest pain that usually results from a lack of oxygen in the heart muscle due to clogged arteries. Norvasc is also prescribed for high blood pressure. It is a type of medication called a calcium channel blocker. These drugs dilate blood vessels and slow the heart to reduce blood pressure and the pain of angina.

What does my medication look like?

Amlodipine (Lipitor) is available with a prescription under the brand name Norvasc. Other brand or generic formulations may also be available. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about this medication, especially if it is new to you.

  • Norvasc 10 mg--white, round, flat-faced, tablets with beveled edges

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•heart problems, including heart failure or aortic stenosis
•liver disease
•low blood pressure
•an unusual or allergic reaction to Amlodipine (Lipitor), other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Norvasc.

  • More common side effects may include:
    Dizziness, headache, fluid retention and swelling, flushing, fatigue, palpitations (fluttery or throbbing heartbeat)

How should I take Amlodipine (Lipitor)?

Take Amlodipine (Lipitor) exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, nurse, ask your pharmacist, or doctor to explain them to you.

Take each dose with a full glass of water. Do not stop taking Amlodipine (Lipitor) without first talking to your doctor, even if you begin to feel better. If you stop taking the medication, your condition could become worse. Store Amlodipine (Atorvastatin) at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
