What are indomethacin capsules?

INDOMETHACIN (Indocin®) is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID). Indomethacin relieves the inflammation and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and gout. Generic indomethacin capsules and sustained-release capsules are available.

You should have frequent checkups with your doctor if you take Indocin regularly. Ulcers or internal bleeding can occur without warning.

How should I take this medicine?

Take Indomethacin (Indocin) capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow capsules whole with a full glass of water; take capsules in an upright or sitting position. Taking a sip of water first, before taking the capsules, may help you swallow them. If possible take bedtime doses at least 10 minutes before lying down. Do not crush or chew the sustained-release capsules. It is better to take Indomethacin with food to prevent stomach upset. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Call 1-800-222-1222 to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, your local poison control center ( http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm ), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include confusion; unusual bleeding or bruising; slow or troubled breathing; severe nausea or stomach pain; severe headache; severe dizziness or drowsiness; seizures; loss of consciousness; decreased urination; vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

Proper storage of Indomethacin (Indocin) Capsules:

Store Indomethacin Capsules at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Indomethacin (Indocin) Capsules out of the reach of children and away from pets.

How should you take Indocin?

Indocin should be taken with food or an antacid, and with a full glass of water. Never take on an empty stomach.

Do not lie down for about 20 to 30 minutes after taking Indocin. This helps prevent irritation that could lead to trouble in swallowing.

If you are using Indocin for arthritis, it should be taken regularly.

If you are using the suppository form of this medicine:

1. Lie down on your side and use your finger to push the suppository well up into the rectum. Hold your buttocks together for a few seconds.
2. Remove the foil wrapper and moisten your rectal area with cool tap water.
3. If the suppository is too soft to insert, hold it under cool water or chill it before removing the wrapper.
4. Indocin suppositories should be kept inside the rectum for at least 1 hour so that all of the medicine can be absorbed by your body.

--If you miss a dose... Take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and return to your regular schedule. Never take a double dose. --Storage instructions... The liquid and suppository forms of Indocin may be stored at room temperature. Keep both forms from extreme heat, and protect the liquid from freezing.

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

If you are taking the liquid form of this medicine, shake the bottle well before each use.

Indocin SR capsules should be swallowed whole, not crushed or broken.
