Why is Levaquin prescribed?

Levaquin cures a variety of bacterial infections, including several types of sinus infection and pneumonia. It is also prescribed for flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, acute kidney infections, certain urinary or chronic prostate infections, and skin infections. Levaquin is a member of the quinolone family of antibiotics.

Label warnings

• Take at regular intervals. Complete the prescribed course unless otherwise directed.
  
  
• Do not take iron preparations or indigestion remedies at the same time of day as this medication.
  
  
• This medication is to be swallowed whole, not chewed.
  
  

How should you take Levofloxacin (Tavanic)?

Take your complete prescription exactly as directed, even if you begin to feel better. If you stop taking Levaquin too soon, the infection may come back.

--If you miss a dose...

Take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

You may take Levaquin at mealtimes or in-between, Mylanta, but you should avoid taking it within 2 hours of the following:

Aluminum or magnesium antacids such as Maalox, or Gaviscon
Iron supplements such as Ferro-Sequels or Feosol
Any multivitamin preparation containing zinc
Videx chewable tablets or pediatric powder
The ulcer medication Carafate

Store at room temperature. Keep container tightly closed.

Use with caution in

• People using corticosteroid medicines.
  
  
• Hereditary blood disorders called porphyrias
  
  
• People who lack an enzyme called G6PD in their blood (G6PD deficiency)
  
  
• Abnormal muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis)
  
  
• History of psychiatric illness
  
  
• Disorders of the brain and nervous system
  
  
• History of seizures (fits)
  
  
• Decreased kidney function
  
  
• Elderly people
  
  

What is the most important information I should know about Levofloxacin (Tavanic)?

Take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Levofloxacin will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Take Levofloxacin with a full glass of water (8 ounces). Drink several extra glasses of fluid each day to prevent crystals from forming in the urine. Take Levofloxacin (Tavanic) on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Levofloxacin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 18 years old. Levofloxacin (Tavanic) may interfere with bone development in a child. There are certain medicines you should not take within the 2 hours before or after you take Levofloxacin. This includes antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum (Tums or Rolaids), didanosine (Videx), the ulcer medicine sucralfate (Carafate), and vitamin or mineral supplements that contain iron or zinc. Taking these other medicines too close to your dose of Levofloxacin can make the antibiotic much less effective.
