It is used to treat urinary tract, prostate, skin, sinus and lung infections, as well as other infections. Generic levofloxacin tablets are not yet available. Possible food and drug interactions when taking Levaquin (Levofloxacin)Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Motrin, Advil, and Naprosyn can increase the risk of a nervous reaction to Levaquin (Levofloxacin). Also, check with your doctor before combining Levaquin with an oral diabetes drug such as Micronase, Glucotrol, or Orinase; changes in blood sugar levels could result. If you are taking the asthma drug, theophylline, or the blood-thinning drug, Coumadin, make sure the doctor is aware of it. Other quinolone antibiotics have been known to interact with these medications. What is levofloxacin?Levofloxacin is in a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones (flor-o-KWIN-o-lones). Levofloxacin fights bacteria in the body. Levofloxacin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Levofloxacin is used to treat bacterial infections that cause bronchitis, urinary tract infections, skin infections, gonorrhea, chlamydia, pneumonia, and infections of the prostate. How should I take this medicine?Take levofloxacin tablets by mouth with or without food. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. Why should Levaquin (Levofloxacin) not be prescribed?If any other quinolone antibiotic--such as Cipro, Noroxin, Maxaquin, Floxin, or Penetrex--has ever given you an allergic reaction, avoid Levaquin (Levofloxacin). |
