Why is Ceftin prescribed?

Ceftin, a cephalosporin antibiotic, is prescribed for mild to moderately severe bacterial infections of the throat, lungs, ears, skin, sinuses, and urinary tract, and for gonorrhea. Ceftin tablets are also prescribed in the early stages of Lyme disease.

What drug(s) may interact with Cefuroxime (Ceftin)?

•other antibiotics
•probenecid
•water pills

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, nutritional supplements, including non-prescription medicines, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What is the most important information I should know about Cefuroxime (Ceftin)?

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to Cefuroxime, or to similar antibiotics, such as Suprax, Spectracef, Omnicef, Keflex, Fortaz, Duricef, Cefzil, Ceclor, and others.

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs (especially penicillin). Also tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, a stomach or intestinal disorder, cancer, heart failure, diabetes, or if you are malnourished.

This medication can cause you to have unusual results with certain lab tests to check for glucose (sugar) in the urine. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are taking Cefuroxime (Ceftin).

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, call your doctor. Do not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.

Cefuroxime (Ceftin) can make birth control pills less effective, which may result in pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are taking birth control pills to prevent pregnancy. You may need to use another form of birth control during treatment with Cefuroxime.

Take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Cefuroxime (Ceftin) will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.

Not to be used in

  • Allergy to cephalosporin-type antibiotics.

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Ceftin

It is important to consult your doctor before taking this drug with probenecid, a gout medication.

If diarrhea occurs while taking Ceftin, consult your doctor before taking an antidiarrhea medication. Certain drugs, such as Lomotil, may cause your diarrhea to become worse.

Be cautious if you are taking potent water pills (diuretics) such as Lasix while on Ceftin. The combination could affect your kidneys.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. There should be an interval of at least 10 to 12 hours between doses.
