Why is Periactin prescribed?

Periactin is an antihistamine given to help relieve cold- and allergy-related symptoms such as hay fever, nasal inflammation, stuffy nose, red and inflamed eyes, hives, and swelling. Periactin may also be given after epinephrine to help treat anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction.

Some doctors prescribe Periactin to treat cluster headache and to stimulate appetite in underweight people.

Why should Cyproheptadine (Periactin) hydrochloride not be prescribed?

Do not take Periactin if you are sensitive to it, or have ever had an allergic reaction to it or to a similar antihistamine.

The elderly and those in a weakened condition should not take Cyproheptadine (Periactin) hydrochloride.

Do not take Periactin if you are taking an antidepressant drug known as an MAO inhibitor. Drugs in this category include Nardil and Parnate.

Newborn or premature infants should not be given Cyproheptadine (Periactin) hydrochloride, nor should it be used by women who are breastfeeding an infant.

Do not take Periactin if you have the eye condition called angle-closure glaucoma, obstruction of the neck of the bladder, an enlarged prostate, a peptic ulcer, or obstruction of the outlet of the stomach.

What side effects may I notice from taking Cyproheptadine?


Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•agitation, dizziness
•dry mouth
•headache
•loss of appetite
•stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, or chest pain
•pain or difficulty passing urine
•seizures (convulsions)

Minor side effects from Cyproheptadine include:
•drowsiness, palpitations, not able to sleep (these are more likely in children)
•blurred vision
•dizziness or fainting spells
•irregular heartbeat, excitability, nervousness, constipation or diarrhea

  • This medication may cause drowsiness. If affected do not drive or operate machinery. Avoid alcoholic drink.

Like other antihistamines, Periactin may make you feel sleepy and sluggish. However, some people, particularly children, may have the opposite reaction and become excited.

How to use Cyproheptadine (Periactin) :

Use Cyproheptadine (Periactin) as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • If you miss a dose of Cyproheptadine (Periactin) , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
